Agricultural household Zeljko Macanovic, from the village Glibaci, Municipality of Pljevlja, Montenegro is one of the biggest organic producers of cereals in Montenegro. This Agricultural household is one of the Grant beneficiaries supported in 2020 within the Project: “Diversification of economic activities in rural areas of Southeast Europe through value chain development” implemented by SWG RRD in partnership with GIZ.

With mentioned support Agricultural household Zeljko Macanovic adapted the warehouse space in the processing facility. Following recommendations from the local and the national authorities and having the certificate for organic production, implementation of the project activities will create the conditions for obtaining the HACCP certificate for organic processing.

Farmer Zeljko Macanovic, with support of family members on his agriculture household organize traditional production respecting all the principles of organic production, using only organic fertilizers as well as indigenous varieties of seeds. Cereals are also processed in the traditional way, by grinding on a natural stone mill with a wooden base, which works on the principle of slow rotation and cold grinding. This type of production does not pollute but preserves and positively affects the environment. Buckwheat, spelt, rye, barley, wheat and oats flour are packed in paper bags. All the waste of his production is of organic origin. From all those reasons the sales of organic products from this farm where significantly increased during recent COVID 19 pandemic. Finally, people start to understand how important traditional production for their health is.

Project activities will contribute to the development of the value chain by enabling sales to a new category of customers (high category hotels and restaurants). The value chain will be strengthened by digital presentation through production of promotional video which will bring production closer and make products more visible to a larger number of customers. Increasing the volume of production and sales will enable new employment and further development.
