The Regional Rural Development Standing Working Group (SWG) in South-Eastern Europe within the SWG EC project: “Fostering regional cooperation and balanced territorial development of Western Balkan countries in the process towards EU integration” supported the organization of the manifestation “Day of Pljevlja cheese” organized by Secretariat for Economy of Municipality of Pljevlja and NGO “Pljevaljski sir”

14th traditional regional “Day of Pljevlja cheese” was organized on 23.10.2015, in Pljevlja, Montenegro. Such kind of manifestation is unique for Montenegro, with competitive part and participation of producers of Pljevjja cheese and fresh and matured cheese cream. For the first time at this manifestation were competed producers of special cheese from other parts of Montenegro and cross border – region “Drina-Tara” and

The focus of this Manifestation was on marketing and economic aspects, therefore, participants were able to present and sell their products at Dairy market.

Pljevlja cheese, is the first traditional type of cheese in Montenegro with branded label of origin. According to quality and quantity of production, it is one of the most important dairy products of Montenegro. The cheese is made from whole ewes, cow’s or mixed milk. In the Municipality of Pljevlja around 55 000 l of milk is produced on daily bases out which 1/3 is used for selling and rest for production of Pljevlja cheese (around 5.5 t of cheese is produced per day).

More than 70 producers of cow’s cheese, fresh and matured cheese cream and special type of cheese and milk cream (cow, goat, and sheep) participated on this manifestation. The manifestation was organized on three locations. The main event took a place in Hotel “Pljevlja” where the competitors delivered the samples of cheese and milk cream for analyses and degustation. The prizes were awarded in several categories (mature cheese, mature and young milk cream, sheep cheese and special type of cheese). In category of the best mature Pljevlja cheese the first prize won Ljiljana Petrovic, village Kosanica; the second prize won Miladinka Vucetic from village Brvenica and the third prize Ivan Mrdak, village Kosanica.

The third prize for special type of cheese won Boban Doskovic, farmer from Prijepolje, Mountain Babine (cross border region “Drina-Tara”).
