The SWG in the period February 1st 2014 – April 30th, 2015 implemented the EU funded project titled: Preparation for implementation of the Area Based Development Approach in the Western Balkans- 2nd phase”.

The overall objective of the second phase of the project was to continue with the process of building capacities and structures within the SWG and within selected regions in order to be able to implement the actions defined with the Programmes for economic development of target cross-border areas.

The project objective was also to test in practice the ABD with implementation of integrated economic development approach in “Drina-Tara” and “Drina-Sava” cross-border regions.

The specific objectives were 1) to contribute to sustainable economic growth of the identified target regions “Drina – Tara” (cross-border region between Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Montenegro), “Prespa” (cross-border region between Albania and Macedonia), “Sharra” (cross-border region between Albania, Macedonia and Kosovo[1]*, and “Drina – Sava” (cross-border region between Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia and Serbia) by a continuation of the facilitation of preparatory activities for the implementation of identified and targeted economic development actions, 2) to strengthen the cooperation of public administrations and other public bodies, the private sector and NGO’s in the field of local development and regional cooperation by building-up local and regional cross-border capacities and 3) to improve competitiveness of products and services from the “Drina-Tara” and ”Drina-Sava” regions through cooperation and development of integrated innovative products and services.

The project promoted mutual understanding and cooperation among the stakeholders, regional ownership of the actions implemented in function to sustainable economic growth of the SEE cross-border regions.

The “ABD grant scheme” was implemented as an activity “Enhancing competitiveness with small grants for renewal of production facilities and purchase of equipment for introducing new production processes to improve or innovate products” within the project.

The grant scheme was designed to support investments in the “Drina – Tara” and “Drina – Sava” cross-border regions related to the improvement of production processes, implementation of improved technology and improvement of quality of products and services.
