Capacity building event “Basic biology principles of bee colonies for more efficient productivity” and “Varroosis and viruses – devastating combination for the bee’s community” for participants from the cross-border region “Drina-Tara”, 18 November 2017 in Visegrad, Bosnia and Herzegovina
On the initiative of the Beekeeping Association “Visegrad”, the Standing Working Group for Regional Rural Development (SWG) in SEE, within the project “Rural development through integrated forest and water resources management in Southeast Europe: Rural perspectives: qualification, reintegration and (self) employment”, financed by the German International Cooperation (GIZ), organized one-day training for beekeepers from Serbia, Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina. The training was held on 18 November 2017 at the Culture Centre in Visegrad, B&H.
“The lack of food is a key factor in weakening of the beekeeping community, as well as varroosis and viruses that can be disastrous” stated professor of Agricultural Faculty from Novi Sad, Nada Plavsa. “In the last ten years, the bee’s disease has been observed due to a number of factors, but the lack of food is a key problem for development of bee’s community. Because of that, the beekeepers have to know a lot, to learn constantly and to learn to cope. They must not just wait for what the nature will say and they have to work accordingly to climate changes in their bee’s communities”, said Plavsa.
“Fighting the varroosis as a destructor must be permanent, serious and effective, if the beekeeper wants to have healthy and advanced communities.Varroosis is not alone, there are other illnesses that accompany it, which are bee’s viruses. Today, 18 viruses are known, and 6 of them make additional problems and the poor beekeeping community is leading to collapse” said Plavsa.
The lectures were attended by beekeepers from Uzice, Bajina Basta, Priboj, Pljevlja, Bijelo Polje, Visegrad, Rudo, Srebrenica, Milici, Gorazde.
“It is common that one of the biggest problems in beekeeping is the education of beekeepers. Every education in any activity is the most important, and such lectures are the basis for gaining knowledge” said the beekeeper Zarko Dragasevic from Pljevlja.
Beekeeper Milan Zloboubovic from Bajina Basta said that this was the best thing that can be organized for beekeepers in the winter period and he was glad that the beekeepers from Bajina Basta were invited in Visegrad.
