Background of the project
The project was a follow up of the Project Preparation Facility: “Preparation of a Proposal for an Area Based Development in the Western Balkans”

Overall objective
The overall objective of the project: “Preparation for implementation of the Area Based Development (ABD) Approach in the Western Balkans” was to further work on building capacities and structures within the SWG and selected regions in order to be able to implement the forthcoming ABD programmes.

The project objectives were to contribute to sustainable economic growth of target regions “Drina – Tara” (cross-border region between Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro), “Prespa” (cross-border region between Albania and Macedonia), “Sharra” (cross-border region between  Albania,  Macedonia and Kosovo[*]),   and “Drina – Sava” (cross-border region between Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Croatia) by  strengthening  the  cooperation  of public administrations and other public bodies, the private sector and NGO’s in the field of local development  and regional cooperation by building-up  local and regional cross-border  capacities.

The project promoted mutual understanding and cooperation among the stakeholders, regional ownership of the actions to be implemented in function to sustainable economic growth of the SEE cross-border regions.

The project created framework conditions within the SWG as organization and the SWG member countries for implementation of the area based development approach and in that way contributed to the sustainable growth of the rural cross-border areas of the SEE region.

Specific objectives

The project “Preparation for implementation of the Area Based Development (ABD) Approach in the Western Balkans” incorporated the following specific objectives:

  1. Contribution to sustainable economic growth of a particular region by facilitating the preparatory activities for implementation of identified economic development actions.
  2. Strengthening the cooperation of public administrations and other public bodies, private sector and NGOs in the field of local development and regional cooperation by building-up local and regional cross-border capacities.

This project was funded by the European Union.

Project duration: January 2013 – December 2013.
