Solid Waste Management in cross-border rural and coastal areas of South Eastern Europe

Regional Rural Development Standing Working Group (SWG) supported the production of short promo film for “Sharra Mountain”, covering the cross-border rural municipalities between Macedonia, Albania and Kosovo*, and Drina delta, covering “Drina-Sava” cross-border region between Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia and Serbia and “Drina-Tara” cross-border region between Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and Serbia).
The SWG team in cooperation with 1.360 representatives of local stakeholders, local population, NGO’s and local authorities performed cleaning actions in 43 municipalities in 6 countries in the cross border regions of “Drina-Tara –Sava” and “Sharra Mountain”. Additionally to the cleaning actions, donation of equipment and accessories for solid waste management was delivered to several municipalities in the cross-border regions.
Results of the implemented pilot measures:
• Equipped 56 schools and one Kindergarten
• 295 new donations :
-Warning tables for damping waste in rural areas;
– Concreate benches with bins;
-Wooden overhangs with tables and benches;
-Bins;
-Containers;
-T-shirts
-Gloves and trash bags.
The promotional short movie was developed within the project “Solid Waste Management in cross-border rural and coastal areas of South Eastern Europe” implemented by the SWG and the Network of Associations of Local Authorities of South-East Europe (NALAS) and supported by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) through the GIZ Open Regional Fund for South East Europe – Modernization of Municipal Services (ORF MMS) and the Government of Switzerland.
The pilot actions were also supported and facilitated by the European Union funded project “Fostering regional cooperation and balanced territorial development of Western Balkan countries in the process towards EU integration” implemented by the SWG.
*This designation is without prejudice to positions on status, and is in line with UNSCR 1244 and the ICJ Opinion on the Kosovo declaration of independence.
