Open Call for participation in the GEO-ADAPT Summer-School ”Geospatial Information for Wildfire Monitoring and Risk Assessment“ from September 06 to 12, 2026, in Ohrid, North Macedonia.
Wildfires in agricultural and forested landscapes are becoming increasingly frequent and intense across the Western Balkans as a result of climate change, posing a growing challenge to the environment, the population, and infrastructure. Geodata and satellite-based remote sensing offer powerful tools for monitoring fires, analyzing their impacts, and assessing fire risks at an early stage. The Summer School provides hands-on training in the technical fundamentals of spatial analysis of fire data, with a focus on satellite imagery analysis in Google Earth Engine. In addition, participants will gain a comprehensive overview of the current state of fire research in the Western Balkans and the work of regional institutions dedicated to monitoring and assessing the risks of wildfires.
This Summer School is jointly organized by the Leibniz Institute of Agricultural Development in Transition Economies (IAMO), Ss. Cyril and Methodius University of Skopje (UKIM), the Landscape Fire Management in the Western Balkans (LFMWB) program, the Regional Fire Monitoring Center (RFMC) and the Regional Rural Development Standing Working Group in South East Europe (SWG) in the frame of the project GEO-ADAPT – ”Geospatial Information for Climate Change Adaptation in the Western Balkans“, with funding from the German Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Regional Identity (BMLEH).

The Summer School is open to all students and professionals in agriculture, forestry and related fields who are affiliated with an institution in one of the six Western Balkan countries. Applicants should have a professional interest in wildfire management and geodata analysis, be fluent in English, and bring their own laptop. Experience in GIS and remote sensing is a strong asset. Applicants should send their CV and motivation letter to geo_adapt@iamo.de by July 31, 2026.
