The First Interim Meeting of the Regional Expert Advisory Working Group on Post-Harvest Handling of Fresh Fruits and Vegetables was held online on 02 June, 2023.
At the meeting, the scope of work was defined and agreed the following two-day meeting in person, where the work plan for the development of post-harvest guidelines for the most economically important types of fresh fruit and vegetables, and table grapes will be elaborated in detail. The participants of the meeting were four selected post-harvest experts for fresh fruits and vegetables, Ms Ivana Dulic Markovic, Regional expert for marketing standards for fresh fruits and vegetables, and Boban Ilic, SWG Secretary General.
The main goal was to create a Post-Harvest Guidance that provides essential technical instructions on best practices for preserving the quality of fresh fruits and vegetables during and after harvesting. This guidance emphasizes the importance of proper handling throughout the harvesting, transportation, and storage processes to maintain the quality of fresh produce in line with marketing standards and trade requirements over the long term. The guidance should take the form of a concise manual or educational brochure that outlines practices to prevent quality degradation and losses, which often result from inadequate harvesting, transport, and storage. The content will be straightforward, featuring clear text, illustrations, and photographs. The technical instructions included in the guidance are based on proven practices derived from scientific research and practical experience. The brochures are designed for a broad audience, including producers, storekeepers, traders, consultants, and others involved in handling fruits and vegetables from harvest to sale. Additionally, they can be utilized by National Extension Services to effectively educate their beneficiaries.
