Regional cooperation for evidence-based and EU compliant policy development for economic diversification of rural areas in Southeast Europe (SEDRA 1)


The overall objective of the project is to formulate regional recommendations for evidence­ based and EU compliant policy on diversification in rural areas, which would be endorsed by national authorities responsible for implementation in SEE countries.

The project will further strengthen regional and national capacities through facilitating theme-specific policy dialogues and providing technical expertise on issues related to economic diversification . Support will be provided for further development of regional coordination structures and mechanisms· in respect to more intensive and broader cooperation and a higher share of self-financing; strengthening the regional stakeholders’ competencies and expertise; setting up relevant working groups on the topics of rural economic diversification.

To contribute to this overall objective, the project is supposed to achieve the following outputs:

  1. Regional coordination structures and mechanisms and stakeholders’ competences for evidence-based and EU compliant policy on economic diversification in rural areas have been consolidated and strengthened.
  2. Evidence-based policy assessments and gap analysis have been developed and have provided policy recommendations in respect to diversification of economic activities in rural areas in SEE
  3. The SWG RRD has deepened and strengthened its regional and international partnerships to ensure long-term perspective

This project is commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), to be jointly implemented by GIZ and the SWG.

Expected project duration: December 2018 – June 2021.
