Fourth National Workshop in Serbia on Climate Change Adaptation in Agriculture

187

The Fourth National Workshop dedicated to the development of Guidelines for the Adaptation of Agricultural Production to Changing Climate Conditions was held from 4 to 6 March 2026 in Šabac, Serbia. The workshop gathered 44 participants representing a wide range of institutions involved in agricultural development, environmental protection, research, policy development and international cooperation. Among the participating institutions were research institutes, universities, relevant ministries, international organizations, local governments, extension services and sectoral associations. The event represented an important step in the ongoing process of developing national guidelines aimed at strengthening the resilience of the agricultural sector to the impacts of climate change.

The central part of the workshop consisted of interactive group work sessions aimed at identifying specific measures and activities for adapting agricultural production to changing climate conditions. Participants were divided into three working groups, each consisting of more than ten representatives from different institutions and sectors. This composition allowed for multidisciplinary discussions and ensured that the perspectives of researchers, policymakers, extension services and practitioners were adequately represented.

Throughout several working sessions organized during the day, participants discussed possible adaptation measures, identified practical implementation activities and considered the institutional and financial conditions necessary for their successful implementation. The discussions focused on a broad range of issues, including sustainable soil and water management, climate-resilient crop production systems, strengthening advisory services, improving data collection and monitoring systems, and developing appropriate financial and policy instruments to support adaptation efforts. The group work sessions also provided an opportunity for participants to share experiences from their respective institutions and sectors, contributing to a constructive and collaborative working atmosphere.

The process of developing the guidelines will continue with the organization of the final national workshop, which is planned to take place in September 2026. This final meeting will provide an opportunity to review the consolidated draft, finalize the proposed measures and agree on the final structure and content of the guidelines.

The activity was organized with the support of GIZ, in cooperation with the Standing Working Group for Regional Rural Development (SWG) in South Eastern Europe (SEE), on behalf of the German Government, within the framework of the Regional Climate Partnership between Germany and the Western Balkans.
