Organized Beekeeping day in Prijepolje with lecturers and Fair “Honey a cure for long life”, 1-3 August, 2019, Prijepolje, Serbia


This year, the Beekeeping Association Prijepolje organized the traditional Fair of Honey and Beekeeping products “Honey a cure for a long life” in the period from 1 till 3 August in Prijepolje, Serbia. Around 30 beekeepers from several cities of the Zlatibor district gathered on the plateau of the Cultural Centre with their colleagues from Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro who also arrived, giving the international character of the event.

Numerous visitors had the opportunity to get acquainted, to taste and buy honey, beekeeping products and equipment as well as other local traditional products. The president of the Beekeeping Association “Prijepolje”, Mirsad Hodzic, stated that the association received supported for organization of the event from the local self-government, the Tourist Organization of Pijepolje, and Kindergarten institution Misa Cvijovic. This year great support was provided from the SWG and GIZ in organization of the lecturers for beekeepers and pre-school children. He expressed special gratitude to the beekeepers who arrived from all over the region.

The event was officially opened by the Deputy Mayor of the Municipality of Prijepolje, Stanko Kijanovic, who emphasized that the entire municipality is proud of the work of the beekeeper’s association, which has more than 200 members and over 6000 bee societies. This association represents a good economic potential, because we know how honey is good for human being stated Kijanovic.

Member of the Executive Board of the Union of Beekeeping Organizations of Serbia, Savo Mrdak spoke about the importance of protecting of bees. He emphasized the good cooperation of beekeepers with raspberry and other fruit growers, which resulted in the absence of pollution of bee colonies and consequently high death rates.

In the premises of the City Cultural Centre, two lectures were held on the topic “Bee diseases” and “Organic beekeeping” conducted by the eminent experts in the field of beekeeping.

Prior to the event on Thursday and Friday, representatives of the Beekeeping Association from Prijepolje organized a lecture for children of the Kindergarten Institution Misa Cvijovic, in Kolovrat and at the Duga facility in Prijepolje. What are the products that we can get from the bees, what is nectar and why it is important that there are more and more people involved in beekeeping where some of the topics presented by the beekeeper Budimir Tesevic.

For the fifth year in the row, beekeepers from the association socialized with pre-school children and introduced them with the story about bees and beekeeping, explaining their importance to humans and nature. It is important for young children to recognize the importance of daily usage of honey and to understand that the bees are the important factor in the ecosystem. It is important for us to animate these little people to become a beekeepers one day, and certainly to become aware that they need to protect nature – stated President of the Beekeepers Association Prijepolje, Mirsad Hodzic.
