Workshop: Developing the sector of medicinal and aromatic plants and implementation of local action groups (LAGs), as an important tool for the development of mountain tourism in the rural areas of Korca region


The two-day event gathered young people from rural areas, students, representative of business sector and NGO’s  from Albania. Workshop was organized in accordance with the COVID-19 measures by the NGO “Economic Intelligence Center” (EIC) in the period from 23 till 24 March, 2021 in Korca, Albania.

During these two days of event the topics presented and discussed in the workshop were focused:

  • Rural tourism and best practices of business
  • Herbal medicine as integrated part of tourism
  • Status, potentials, and utilization of Medical Aromatics Plants in the region of Korca
  • The role of local action groups in the sustainable development of mountain tourism

The second day of the event was organized field visit in the premises of “Cibuku sh.p.k”, in Korca Albania, whose business activity is mainly focused on collecting and exporting medical and aromatic plants.

In this field day activity 20 young people participant, were presented with best practices and strategies for the development of medical and aromatic plants sector that can also increase opportunities for making business as well as in the sector of mountain tourism. In details they were presented with the structure and the actors in the value chain, the importance of the added value in the sector, the analysis SWOT and the actual situation of the supply chain.

This activity is supported by Regional Rural Development Standing Working Group (SWG) in South-Eastern Europe in partnership with Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH (GIZ) within the project: “Strengthening capacities for supporting rural development in Southeast Europe”.
