Interim Meeting of the REAWG on Sustainable Forest Management

Interim Meeting of the Regional Expert Advisory Working Group (REAWG) on Sustainable Forest Management within the project: “Strengthening capacities for cooperation in the implementation of a sustainable, multifunctional, ecosystem-based approach and in close to nature forest management (CNFM) in Western Balkan” was organized in a period 11 – 12th May in Skopje, North Macedonia. This meeting is continuation of collaboration within the framework of APD Germany – Western Balkans in 2023 with support provided Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture of Germany (BMEL). The Regional Rural Development Standing Working Group in SEE coordinates and facilitate the Regional Expert Advisory Working Groups (REAWG) on Sustainable Forest Management.

The Interim meeting of the REAWG on Sustainable Forest Management gathered representatives from directorates on forestry under the ministries of agriculture, national public forest enterprises, national professionals and academia working in the field of sustainable forest management from the Western Balkans, to discuss on how to strengthen the implementation of the EU Green Agenda for the Western Balkans and the capacities for cooperation in the implementation of a sustainable, multifunctional, ecosystem, based of approach and Close to Nature Forest Management with special focus on climate change challenges in the Western Balkan region.

Opening session have been chaired by Mr. Boban Ilic, SWG Secretary General who introduce the context of the program as well as the Agenda of the meeting. Presentation on management practices trough good practice examples within state forest enterprise Hessen Forest from Germany have been prepared by Hessen Forst representative Mr. Lutz Hofheinz. He presented practice within biodiversity protection under the Climate Change in Germany, forest management guidelines in Hessen Forst company. Mr. Nenad Petrovic, SWG Regional Expert presented improved forest management and biodiversity protection under climate change in Serbia.

In afternoon session, participants departure from Skopje to National Park “Mavrovo” where representative of that company presented their practice and management guidelines in high, copies and mixed origin beech forests in the National Park „Mavrovo“. Presentation have been followed by joint discussion and comparations between Balkan and Germany practice in forest management.

On the second day of the meeting, regional expert, Dr. Nenad Petrovic presented new forest management guidelines and demonstration plots in Serbia. It have been agreed that REAWG will be invited to the Exposure visit to Hessen Forests in Germany from 19-24 Jun, 2023.
