Village gatherings, Loznica, Serbia


Village gatherings is event that brought together residents of rural settlements of the City of Loznica, Serbia with the aim to preserve the traditional way of living, improve social and economic activities in the countryside through non-agricultural activities. The event promoted old customs, crafts, songs, games and other traditional and cultural values of this region.

“This event is a big promotion for providing opportunities for many young people to stay to live in the countryside, for which we have created many preconditions for them so far,  pointed out the Mayor of Loznica. We allocate houses and plots in the villages for young married couples, we gave incentives to farmers and we have given scholarships to almost 3,500 young people over past ten years. Many of children with families gather in village Lesnica on the festival and that is the biggest impression from this beautiful event”.

As part of the program, visitors had the opportunity to participate in numerous activities like competition for the best kotlic (cooking dishes) which brought together cooking enthusiasts from several villages located on Jadar river . In addition, table tennis and chess tournaments were held, providing sports entertainment for all generations.

This activity is supported by the project: “Promotion of Economic Diversification of Rural Areas in Southeast Europe (SEDRA II) in SEE- Value chain capacity building on agriculture and rural tourism to streamline rural employment opportunities” implemented in partnership by GIZ and SWG.
